Welcome to niklaus leuenberger
Lost Innocence-Safety and Security in the Hotel- and Travel Industry.
Since Niklaus Leuenberger joined the Hotel industry over 35 years ago the world has become another place in terms of safety and security. The increase in crimes, terrorism etc. has affected many facets of the tourism industry.
Niklaus Leuenberger recalls that when he was flying commercial for the first time, one drove to an airport, checked in, proceeded to the gate and flew off. His daughters, today almost in their mid twenties, do not know how to get to a gate without clearing security lines, x-ray machines, body search etc. A sad reality the younger generation looks at as the normal procedure.
Niklaus Leuenberger's experience with safety and security issues in the hotel world 'pre 9-11' usually included assaults, pushed in guest room doors and minor thefts, as well as issues with guests slipping and falling. Often, these incidents ended with some kind of compensation or a possible law suit. ‘Post 9/11' incidents in hotels however, demonstrate a 'terrorism' aspect.
Pre 9-11, approximately 25 hotel bombings world wide were registered, while nowadays, in our post 9-11 world, over 60 bombings have taken place.
Where are the days, we could leave a bag or package unattended in a hotel lobby, without a problem. Today, every package, bag etc. in an airport, train station, hotel lobby, corridor or any public place etc. raises instant alarm bells.
Many of these hotel bombings in the past had occurred overseas and had not affected or concerned us in any way. The happenings of 9-11 and most recently in Indonesia , Mumbai and Pakistan have raised our concern and awareness to the vulnerability of the travel industry. Many of these disturbing and tragic events involve an American flagged hotel or airliner. We hear of incidents and attempts of terrorism on airplanes, which instantly become 'world news', further fueling the fear and concern of the traveling public. The world takes notice, but continues to travel since we all get used to live with these threats.
According to Niklaus Leuenberger it is of the utmost importance that hotels today have to improve and refine their safety and security procedures, just as airports had to. Indoor car parking in hotels could present potentially lethal hazards if someone brought in a car with harmful substances, such as explosives or weapons of biological or chemical nature.
Employees in hotels have to be educated to be alert and report suspicious looking packages, pieces of luggage etc. to the security force in their hotel. People's behavior and mannerisms often give an indication that something might be wrong as well. All guest- contact employees should undergo some basic training to aid them to become more observant to the faces of terrorism and not to be shy to report their suspicions.
Better safe than sorry!
